SATURDAY, ORDINARY TIME 16/MEMPHIS

At the McCarty Pottery in Merigold, Mississippi: a sky made of water. It's an apt image for today, when the sky does in fact seem made of water, and all of it is falling down on us.

Fish might well swim among the trees.

Today I think the plan is to drive around West Tennessee looking at sites related to my mother's family history, then come back here to meet her former neighbor for a glass of wine, then to my mother-in-law's for dinner. Still waiting for the Artgirl to wake up so we can gather ourselves for the spring into the big wet river-delta world.

Wearing:

I start to lose my mind in this place in a hurry.

*Secondhand Not Perfect Linen Leila dress (S/M) in Cinnamon Rose, bought December 2023, last worn July 13

*Very old (as in bought 2005 or 2006) blue Jones New York rayon cardigan

*Thrifted Crocs, passed along in April by the Texasgirl, last worn yesterday

As you can maybe see, the worst of the wrinkles have indeed fallen out of my linen dress without my having to iron it. I take back everything I've always said about linen as a suboptimal travel fabric. It's actually fine.

And I'm glad I still own this cardigan after all these years. I wouldn't buy it now, because of the synthetic fiber content, but honestly, sometimes it's just the perfect thing. It's hard to find a really cropped cardigan to wear with dresses like this, but this shape is exactly the shape you'd want to wear with a dress like this, covering the shoulder when you need to, but still giving full swing to the skirt. Also, this blue is the best color combination with the blushy rose pink of the dress. I've worn my cobalt merino cardigan with this dress, but I really prefer the lighter, steelier blue, which seems like a better balance. I'd still like to find a shorter, more fitted cardigan in a light teal or aqua to wear with it, but I think this blue will remain my favorite.

So I'm dressed with a minimum of effort or stress and ready for whatever the day brings. And I'm glad I saved this cheerful color for the seriously gloomy weather.

Also glad I brought my most waterproof sandals, so I can look cute but not have slimy shoes.

Hoping that wherever you are, nothing is raining on your parade.
