WEDNESDAY, ORDINARY TIME 11/NORWAY

Piscina to the right of the altar in the medieval private chapel in the Rosencrantz Tower, where the medieval kings in Bergen would have heard the Mass daily.

Medieval chapel alter with extremely fake suggestion of the original stained glass.

We had supper (roasted cod with chorizo and vegetables, very delicious) at Dr. Wiesner's, the pub in this neighborhood, where we were the only non-Norwegians. At the table next to ours, a big group of older women, with a couple of husbands in tow, were eating, drinking, laughing and talking, just having a regular old Tuesday-night live-it-up. We were there early, and the clientele was mostly older --- like us, actually. Everybody having an early night out, presumably before having an early night in, as one does. We went to bed maybe around . . . 8? 9?

I slept until 10 this morning, as one also does when one is not as resilient as one used to be after 33 straight hours awake. I wore an eye mask to sleep, because it's never quite dark here at this time of year --- though when I got up in the middle of the night for the bathroom, the light was very dim --- and so was not awakened by the rising light in the morning as I am at home.

We're taking a slow, quiet day today. We've been to Bergen before, and will spend three days here at the end, so although we want to go out and walk, we don't feel too pressed to see things. Tomorrow we get up, check out, and drive up the Sognefjord to our next place, a cabin on a spit of land accessible only by ferry.

Wearing today (high of 60F in Bergen, cloudy at the moment, possible rain):

*Wool& Willow (M/Long) in Ocean Teal (I almost didn't bring her, but now I'm glad I did)

*SecondhandAllbirds tencel-merino leggings

*Thrifted Peruvian Connection alpaca cardigan (also hadn't planned to bring this cardigan, put it in at the last minute, glad I did)

Not wearing shoes here, but I could opt to wear either my Xero hikers again, or my Tari boots, which I packed in my husband's suitcase.

I might also add my silk kimono as a scarf --- wore that out last night and was glad of the light warmth at my neck.

In fact, I think I will add it.

Adds a suitable finish to a city outfit.

Hair up again --- I think I'll shower and wash it this afternoon or evening, but I don't feel like dealing with wet hair now. I just did a quick cleanup to get dressed, so whenever the husband shall have done the same, I'm ready to step out with him.

We have a shared bathroom in this particular Airbnb setup --- the self-enclosed flat we rented last time is occupied while we're here, though we'll have it again for our 3-day stay at the end. It's a bit of a dance, with three little suites sharing the same bathroom on this floor, but okay. I look forward to a series of cabins and flats to ourselves, though, in the coming days. The older I get, the more I like privacy.

One thing I love: seeing and hearing children everywhere. Yesterday evening, kids out playing in the long twilight, roaming the streets, just doing kid things, unmicromanaged by adults. That's got to be one reason why this country always scores high on those happiness indexes. Have a decent, normal childhood where you're presumed to be a functional person and not in any particular danger at any given moment, and you will probably be a more chill adult than you would have been if people had hovered and worried over what might theoretically happen to you at every minute of every day.

On our way out now.
