STYLE DIARY: TUESDAY OF ADVENT 1, 2021

Dora, who is feeling much better after tearing one of her dew claws and subsequently visiting the vet. We needed to go anyway, but the dew-claw incident, sustained during play outdoors last night, put the vet on the urgent burner. Dora did well, all things considered –- considering chiefly that she was terrified, though some well-placed bribes went a long way toward mollifying her. We came home with an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory for the nail the vet removed, some ointment for a fungal infection in her ears, some heartworm/flea/tick preventive, and a round of anti-anxiety meds, which I might save for Christmas. Merry Christmas, Dora. Have some CALM.

It's a beautiful day out, chilly and clear. My husband spent an hour Saturday afternoon splitting wood, so at some point we'll have to have a bonfire beneath the winter stars.

Wearing today (thrown on in a hurry because I was going to the vet, and knew I would come home covered with DOG):

Old charcoal ponte-knit skinny jeans. Thrifted soft-grape shirt, whose pointed collar I removed because I prefer band collars: half-tucked-in. Charcoal Xero Colorado sandals, which are really too matchy to make a great outfit, but are comfortable and at least provide some interesting texture. I didn't wear the duster cardigan to the vet, because that would have been a bit much –– frantic dog, leash, folder of vet records, bag of meds, all trying to get through doors and in and out of the car –– but it's just right for home. I could dress this up if I wanted, which I don't, with my camel knee boots over my skinnies, or my Docs for contrast. But with the weather so dry, these sandals with socks are a good choice for walking.

As you can see, I'm having the usual tops-and-bottoms difficulty: shirts rumple out of place so readily that I often avoid wearing them. But I do like this color. This shirt works well as a top layer, probably better than it works as an actual shirt, but I do like the color, which was why I bought it to begin with. It is nice with the layers of gray, I think.

Here it is again, bunching up all weird, which drives me crazy –– but I like the color. That's probably going to be my mantra for the day.

More Dora, reuniting with her favorite toy, though now, as I'm writing this, she's passed out on her bed at my feet. I'm going to return to my revision work and do some reading –– another poetry book to blurb by the end of this month, and I haven't cracked it yet, plus a round of sonnets to read for a contest. It's at this stage that I always ask myself why I said yes to these things, but they are the kinds of things it's good to do when asked, in the spirit of community. It's always better to be generous when you can, than not. But I sort of wish I could pass out with Dora and do nothing else for the rest of the day.
